Where is the Yoda Cave Iceland?
The map below shows how to get to Yoda Cave and the distance between the Yoda Cave and the town of Vik. It’s only 16 minutes away!
There are no signs that lead to the cave, so it’s best to have the Yoda Cave Iceland pinned on your Google Maps to make sure you don’t miss your turn.

The road leading to the Yoda Cave is short, but it’s in poor condition. However, any car could easily make this drive. As you drive down the road, you’ll pass a small parking lot — this is not the parking for Yoda Cave – it’s a trailhead parking area for a different hike. After you pass this lot, you’ll encounter another sign warning that some should not to continue if uncomfortable driving in rough conditions. We went ahead with the drive (we were driving a 4×4 though), but really any car can make it, just take it slow. If you are uncomfortable, you can park in this lot and walk the rest of the way. It’ll take you about 10 minutes to reach the cave.

How Far is the Yoda Cave from Reykjavik?
The Yoda Cave is about a 2 hour one-way drive from Reykjavik Iceland. You could definitely visit the Yoda Cave as a day trip from Reykjavik, but I recommend adding other attractions in the area, as this is just a quick stop and won’t take you very long to see. Other things to do in this area are exploring the Vik, Iceland area and the famous Reynisfjara black sand beach.
What is the real name of the Yoda Cave in Iceland?
The real name of the Yoda Cave in Iceland is “Gígjagjá” in Icelandic. “Gígjagjá” refers to story of a female sea monster who was put under a spell and once lived in the cave.
Yoda Cave Iceland Details
Yoda Cave Iceland doesn’t close, you can visit it any time of day, all year round.
There are no facilities once you reach the end of the road. You’ll just park in the small lot and walk across some black sand to the cave – it’s a super short walk and the cave is easily recognizable from the outside.
There are rumors of a paid parking fee being put up here, but when I visited, there was nothing.

How much time do you need to visit the Yoda Cave?
Not much! The Yoda Cave is a quick photo-op stop along the ring road, so you can be done in about 10 minutes. Maybe longer if you linger around the beach — the beach is really nice, but it was cool and misty when we were there and we didn’t stick around.

The Yoda Cave Iceland
It’s just a short walk from the parking area to the cave. We visited around 9am in July and we were the only people there; you’ll probably encounter more tourists as the day goes on, especially if the weather is nice. We loved having the place to ourselves!
There are no creatures inside the cave, it’s just dark and a little musty, as any cave would be. So don’t worry about bats. It was a bit wet when we were there but nothing to terrible.

Final Thoughts – Pros and Cons
The Yoda Cave is definitely worth a quick visit on your Iceland ring road trip. It won’t take long, you might have the whole place to yourself, and it really DOES look like Yoda! This isn’t one of those things where you have to squint your eyes and twist your neck to see — it clearly looks like Yoda.
Pros
It truly looks like Yoda
Very quick stop
No crowds
Cons:
Road leading to the cave is in rough shape
