FossHotel Stykkisholmur – Iceland Hotel Review

We stayed at the Fosshotel Stykkisholmur for two nights during our Iceland road trip around the country. Here is my honest hotel review of the Fosshotel in Stykkisholmur – let’s begin!

In case you’re not familiar, FossHotels are an Icelandic hotel chain found all around the country. If you’re doing a Ring Road trip and trying to find American chains like Hilton or Marriott, well, you won’t find them outside of Reykjavik. But if you like hotel chains (like I do), I was really pleased with the FossHotel chain and I highly recommend them if you’re looking for something like you’d get at a Marriott while traveling the Ring Road, as you can find them almost everywhere.

Where is the Fosshotel Stykkisholmur? Is this a good location for visiting the Snaefellsness Peninsula?

The Fosshotel Stykkisholmur is located in the largest town on the Snaefellsness Pensinula – Stykkisholmur. The map below shows the distance between Kirkjufell (one of the most popular attractions on the peninsula) to the hotel:

It may look like it’s really out of the way, but it’s not that bad, and honestly, I really liked staying in this town. For our visit, we arrived on the Snaefellsness Pensinula after hiking the Glymur Waterfall (our previous night stay was at the Hotel Vellir – read my review here). We arrived in the late afternoon, so we only visited one attraction on the Snaefellsness Peninsula before going to our hotel (we visited Kirkjufell). The next day, we had a full day devoted to exploring the Snaefellsness Peninsula, which worked out fantastically.

The Fosshotel is located on a hill, and I suppose you could walk around the town down to the harbor, we drove down there when we were looking for somewhere nearby to eat (hey, it was misting!). I highly recommend the little fish and chips stand down by the harbor – it was delicious.

Additionally, we chose this hotel as we would be taking the Ferry Baldur to the Westfjords on the morning of our checkout. This made it super easy to catch the ferry since we were staying nearby.

These jumping pillows/jumping balloons are incredibly fun!

One more thing about the location – there is a small park right next to the hotel — and this park has a jumping balloon! This was the first time I saw one of these public trampolines and I was fascinated by it. Though I didn’t jump on this particular one, I did find one later on during our trip. They’re a ton of fun – for all ages!

This hotel has a huge parking lot with free parking. Just expect there to be tour buses here.

Rooms at the Foss Hotel

There are a few different room types here and as with most Foss Hotels, you’ll be able to find Junior Suites as well as rooms with three beds. We had a regular double room, and it was very nice, clean and modern. The room had a small refrigerator and a hot pot and the room itself was a good size. This was one of the best places we stayed on our trip! The wifi worked great and the room was quiet. Blackout curtains were on the window and we got a good night’s sleep. Daily housekeeping is done here too!

Breakfast at the Foss Hotel

This was one of the best breakfasts we had on our Iceland trip! The breakfast buffet here is fantastic. It is NOT free — you can either include it in your rate when you book (I booked this stay, as well as all my Iceland stays except the Marriott) through Booking.com, or you can pay for it on arrival. Though it’s not free, I highly recommend getting breakfast at hotels that offer it, as it’s so convenient and overall, the food in Iceland is quite expensive, so it’s nice to have a meal out of the way. The restaurant area is really nice and overlooks the ocean.

The restaurant also serves dinner, but we chose to eat at the fish and chips stand in the harbor. It looked quite expensive, even by Iceland standards. There is also a bar and a nice lobby area.

Final Thoughts – FossHotel Stykkisholmur Hotel Review

I really enjoyed staying at the Foss Hotel Stykkisholmur – I thought it was a great location for exploring the Snaefellsness Peninsula, though it might not look that way on the map. Most of the towns on the peninsula are quite small, so if you’re looking for more amenities, staying in Stykkisholmur might be more of your vibe, as you’ll find some restaurants, shops and even a Bonus grocery store. I thought the hotel was perfect, the breakfast was one of the best we had on our trip (it doesn’t beat the Courtyard Keflavik – that was top notch — but it was right up there!), and I loved the town. I highly recommend staying here if your travels bring you to the Snaefellsness Peninsula in Iceland!

  1. That looks like a good selection for breakfast! And interesting that they had a hot pot. Not sure I’ve seen that before. I’m sure that far up north was an exciting experience!

  2. We have stayed at another Fosshotel and loved it, really good quality rooms with good service! Will keep this one in mind for our next trip to Iceland!
