Iceland Hotel Review: FossHotel Westfjords (Patreksfjordur)
FossHotels are an Icelandic chain of hotels found all over the country, located in many of the popular tourist destinations on the Ring Road — and off the Ring Road, as in the case of this hotel that I’m about to review – the FossHotel Westfjords in the small fishing village of Patreksfjordur.
This was the second Foss Hotel that we stayed in during our Iceland Ring Road trip, and being that we had a very pleasant experience at the first FossHotel we stayed in, we were looking forward to staying at the FossHotel Westfjords — and we had a great time! Our stay was short; we only stayed one night here before moving on. So let’s get into this review and I’ll tell you all about our stay here.

Where is the FossHotel Westfjords?
This hotel is located in Patreksfjörður, Iceland, in the Westfjords region. It is the only Foss Hotel in the Westfjords of Iceland. Here is a link to their official site. This hotel is only open May 1 – October 1. There is a free parking lot on site with lots of spaces. We had no trouble parking.
Rooms at the FossHotel Westfjords / Patreksfjörður
This is a smaller hotel, with only 40 rooms, with rooms either offering an ocean view or a ‘mountain’ view (we had a mountain view room — which wasn’t much of a view — it overlooked a campground. Not a big deal, I didn’t want to pay more for an ocean view room). Rooms are basic but clean — it’s your typical mid-range Iceland hotel room, with the separate duvet covers on each bed. Our room had hardwood floors, a small refrigerator and a hot pot for making tea. Compared to the FossHotel Stykkisholmur, the room was much smaller.
The FossHotel Westfjords does have triple rooms, which are difficult to find in Iceland (or overseas anywhere for that matter), with three beds. Otherwise, rooms only accommodate 1 or 2 people.

Restaurant / Breakfast
There is a restaurant on-site, but we didn’t eat there. We did have breakfast included in our stay. The breakfast was on-par with the other FossHotel we stayed at the previous night, in that they had a decent selection of hot and cold items, sweet and savory (though it wasn’t as elaborate as the other Fosshotel in Stykkisholmur).

Why Did we choose this hotel?
We only had one night allocated to visiting the Westfjords, which I know isn’t “enough” but it was what we had to work with. We took the Ferry Baldur over from Stykkisholmur (on the Snaefellsness Peninsula), and then drove to Latrabjarg to see the puffins. After that, we made our way to Patreksfjordur where we stayed here, at the FossHotel.
The Westfjords is a remote region with not a lot of lodging choices, so for the area we were covering on this trip, it made sense to stay around here. It was about an hour drive out to Latrabjarg to see the puffins from the FossHotel in Patreksfjordur, so pretty convenient, relatively speaking.
Could the Fosshotel Westfjords be a good base to explore the Westfjords?
The Westfjords are huge and to see the main sights, there is no one “good” base. You’re going to want to stay in two different locations when doing a Westfjords trip. For part of your stay, yes, this would be a good base for seeing Latrabjarg, Rauðisandur (the red sand beach) and the famous Dynjandi waterfall. For exploring the more northern regions of the Westfjords, I would probably stay in Ísafjörður.
Final Thoughts – FossHotel Westfjords in Iceland
Overall, we enjoyed our stay here. The location was great for what we were doing in the Westfjords — it’s only an hour away from the bird cliffs at Latrabjarg. Although we had a great stay, I thought the Fosshotel in Stykkisholmur was a bit nicer, but I still highly recommend staying here at the FossHotel Westfjords in Patreksfjordur.
